ALICANTE, the city was founded by the Greeks more than 2,500 years ago under the name Acre Leuca (‘Cerro Blanco’), then the Romans renamed it Lucentum (City of Light) and the Arabs named it Al Lukant.
The main attraction in Alicante, is the “Santa Barbara castle”. This castle is is located on cliff Benacantil at an altitude of 166m abovesea level, and has always been an important strategic point during the battles for the city. Today from the castle you can admire the breathtaking view of the city of Alicante, and the sea with its beaches and neighboring villages. Also there is now a museum of history in the castle.

PINK LAKE, After Alicante we will go south, specifically, to the Natural Park of Lagunas de la Mata and Torrevieja. In it, we found a couple of salty lagoons, but each with a different color.
To the north, the lagoon of La Mata, which has a greenish appearance, nothing out of the ordinary. However, to the south we are quickly struck by the immense lagoon of Torrevieja, but above all, its pink color.

This pink color, which permeates the banks of this lagoon, is mainly due to bacteria (halobacteria) present in this extreme environment. To be more exact, it is due to proteins called bacteriorhodopsin that bind to the membranes of halobacteria.
Our recommendation is that you go with flip flops or whatever you want, but not barefoot, because the salt crystals that we step on are quite annoying. Yes, try to take a piece, and you will see that in nature, geometric shapes do exist. Depending on the weather and the solar position, the pink color of the lagoon can be very intense or very thin, so it can be visited at any time of the year.
It is important to know that the Pink Lake, has two seasons, in summer, it usually has the effect of intense pink, due to heat and sun, and it is where you can bathe, but in winter, the color is not usually so pink, but the sunset is magnificent, to take stunning and unforgettable photos.
