Toledo is a city in the region of Castilla la Mancha, where the ingenious Don Quixote, with his faithful Sancho Panza, spent some time and the land was immortalised forever by Miguel de Cervantes.

This imposing city was declared a «World Heritage City» by UNESCO on 28th November 1986 and has preserved a unique heritage that dates back to the Neolithic period. All the peoples who have arrived on the Iberian Peninsula have left their cultural mark on this city, defined by the Roman Titus Livius as «parva urbs, sed loco munitia«.

It entered history in 192 B.C., when it was conquered by the Roman legions.

It is obvious, that the city is called the «open-air museum», as the historic city centre is full of medieval buildings, surrounded by thick walls. Toledo has a nickname of «the city of three cultures», which is not surprising given that almost every house here is a reminder of a time when Muslims, Christians and Jews coexisted peacefully and the Arab influence is particularly noticeable.

A wealth of unique monuments and Toledo’s special atmosphere attract many tourists.

It is as if the narrow streets take you back to the time when the city was the capital and home to royalty.

We will have free time to visit the history of the city at leisure and enjoy it to the fullest, which was once the capital of the Spanish Empire until 1560 when it moved to Madrid.

We will be able to see its impressive position from the cliffs of the Tagus River (one of Spain’s main rivers) with incredible views.

We will explore the palaces, the cathedral and the house museum of Greco, an internationally famous painter of the 16th century.

Steel in Toledo is considered the best in Europe for making swords and daggers, and Toledo is still considered a city of armourers and jewellers. It is here that they use the medieval Arab method called Damascene, to work with steel; it consists of applying gold or silver threads to steel weapons or jewellery.

Although nowadays most of the masters of this trade in Toledo devote their time to making copies of famous swords, as they are very popular with tourists, some of the armourers still make real armour for the armies of different countries, and for steel and knife lovers and collectors.

Hollywood has been a loyal customer of Toledo steel makers for decades and their most famous swords are those from «The Lord of the Rings».
